How industrial M-Bus Wireless to MQTT converters work

M-Bus Wireless is a standard widely used for wireless reading of consumption meters such as gas meters, water meters, electricity meters, heat meters and other utility devices. It ensures efficient data transmission without the need for wired connections, which is especially useful in urban and industrial environments. On the other hand, MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) is a lightweight machine-to-machine communication protocol based on the publish/subscribe pattern. By combining both technologies, M-Bus Wireless to MQTT converters enable seamless integration of distributed metering infrastructures with modern IoT platforms, SCADA systems or cloud services supporting MQTT.

Industrial M-Bus Wireless to MQTT converters

Each M-Bus Wireless to MQTT converter available in our offer is designed for DIN rail mounting, features robust electromagnetic immunity, and is adapted for operation in a wide temperature range from -40°C to +85°C. Thanks to these characteristics, the devices are suitable for use both in protected industrial cabinets and outdoor installations exposed to harsh conditions. Converters support multiple interfaces, including M-Bus master, M-Bus Wireless (wM-Bus), and Ethernet ports, allowing easy integration with existing infrastructures. They are widely compatible with meters from well-known manufacturers such as Siemens, Kamstrup, Maddalena, Sontex, Engelmann, Amber-Wireless and others.

Depending on the model, the converters can handle from 32 up to 250 M-Bus slaves, while also supporting up to 32 wireless M-Bus devices. Available variants cover different wireless frequency bands, such as 169 MHz, 433 MHz, and 868 MHz, making them suitable for national and regional requirements across Europe. In addition, converters support the main wireless communication modes defined by the wM-Bus standard, including S1, T1, N1 and N2. This flexibility ensures that integrators can select the right converter according to the project’s scale and local regulations.

For security, MQTT communication can be encrypted with TLS/SSL protocols, which guarantees data integrity and protection against unauthorized access. Another advantage is the dedicated SCAN&DECODE software, developed by the manufacturer, which allows automatic scanning of M-Bus networks and decoding of all registers in the telegrams. This significantly reduces installation time and simplifies configuration, even in large-scale deployments.

In practice, the converters are an ideal bridge between wireless metering networks and IoT applications. They allow collected data to be published in an MQTT broker, where it can be used by SCADA systems, building management systems (BMS), or cloud analytics platforms. This makes it possible to build scalable solutions for energy management, smart cities, and industrial automation.
