LG VRF to KNX Interface for Up to 16 Indoor Units.

The INKNXLGE016O000 gateway from Intesis has been specifically developed to enable fully bidirectional integration between LG VRF air conditioning systems and KNX automation installations. Designed for professional building automation environments, this interface provides a seamless solution for controlling and monitoring up to 16 indoor LG AC units via a single device.

The device features an opto-isolated KNX TP1 port for integration with KNX networks and an RS485 port for communication with LG indoor units. All major HVAC functions, such as on/off, mode, fan speed, and setpoint temperature, are fully accessible via KNX, making the system ideal for hotels, offices, and smart homes.

In addition to control capabilities, the gateway allows real-time monitoring of internal unit variables, error codes, and operational status. The RS232 console port allows for easy configuration and firmware updates, ensuring long-term scalability and maintenance. The compact form factor and support for both wall and DIN rail mounting ensure flexible installation in any environment.

From a KNX perspective, INKNXLGE016O000 behaves as a native KNX TP-1 device, exchanging standard KNX telegrams (READ / WRITE / UPDATE) with group addresses defined in ETS. Each LG indoor unit is exposed as an independent set of KNX communication objects, allowing granular per-unit control and feedback while keeping the KNX and LG systems continuously synchronized.

The gateway continuously monitors the LG EIA-485 (PI485) bus and updates KNX objects on any value change. When a KNX WRITE telegram is received, the corresponding command is immediately transmitted to the LG VRF system. After KNX bus recovery, the device can automatically issue READ requests for objects marked with the “Read on Init” flag, ensuring correct state restoration after power or bus interruptions.

Advanced KNX datapoint support enables flexible integration with BMS and room controllers. Operating modes can be mapped using standardized DPT 20.105 (HVAC Control Mode) or non-standardized 5.x DPTs, fan speed can be controlled via DPT 5.001 (Scaling) or enumerated values, and temperature setpoints are exchanged using DPT 9.001. This allows direct compatibility with thermostats, visualization panels, and supervisory KNX logic.

For installations requiring external temperature reference, INKNXLGE016O000 supports ambient temperature input from KNX. The gateway internally compensates the LG setpoint based on the difference between KNX ambient temperature and KNX setpoint, allowing KNX-based temperature regulation even though LG indoor units do not natively accept an external ambient temperature signal.

Commissioning is performed using the Intesis MAPS configuration tool via USB or Ethernet. Indoor units can be added manually by address or automatically detected using the built-in scan of the LG PI485 bus. Diagnostic viewers provide live status of KNX objects, LG signals, communication activity (TX/RX), and error conditions, simplifying troubleshooting during startup and maintenance.

Comprehensive diagnostics include monitoring of communication status, unit availability, and LG error codes. Each indoor unit reports its operational state and a consolidated error code via KNX objects, allowing fast fault identification and integration with KNX alarm or maintenance systems.

FAQ – commissioning and diagnostics of INKNXLGE016O000

Practical answers for KNX and HVAC integrators: configuration, wiring, addressing and fault analysis.

? How many LG indoor units can INKNXLGE016O000 control?

INKNXLGE016O000 supports up to 16 LG indoor units connected to the PI485 bus. Each unit is configured with its own LG address and exposed as an independent set of KNX communication objects.

? Which KNX datapoint types are used by INKNXLGE016O000?

The gateway supports standardized DPTs such as DPT 20.105 for HVAC operating mode, DPT 9.001 for temperatures, DPT 5.001 for fan speed scaling, and 1-bit DPTs for On/Off and mode status, ensuring broad ETS compatibility.

? Can INKNXLGE016O000 use ambient temperature from KNX?

Yes. When enabled, the gateway calculates and sends a compensated LG setpoint based on KNX ambient temperature and KNX setpoint, allowing KNX-based temperature control even though LG units do not natively accept external ambient temperature input.

? How are LG indoor units detected during commissioning?

Using the Intesis MAPS tool, indoor units can be added manually by address or automatically detected by scanning the LG PI485 bus within a defined address range.

? What diagnostics are available in INKNXLGE016O000?

The gateway provides live monitoring of KNX and LG communications, TX/RX activity, unit status, and consolidated LG error codes, accessible through diagnostic viewers in Intesis MAPS.

? What are typical wiring considerations for the LG PI485 bus?

The LG PI485 bus must be wired with correct polarity to the RS485 terminals of INKNXLGE016O000. All connected indoor units must be powered and correctly addressed to ensure successful communication.

If needed, provide your KNX topology and LG indoor unit list to fine-tune addressing and parameters for INKNXLGE016O000.
