Industrial converters from RS232, RS422 and RS485 to fibre

Converters from RS232 and RS485 to fibre optic allow long-distance transmission of devices communicating via RS232 or RS485 serial port via a fibre optic interface, over distances of up to 120 km. Optical signals are immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI), which is particularly important in industrial environments with high levels of interference.

Additionally, optical fibre provides galvanic isolation between devices, which increases safety and protects against surges and potential differences. This significantly extends the standard communication capabilities of the RS232 and RS485 interfaces and provides additional transmission protection against the effects of electromagnetic discharge and other communication interference. This is particularly important in industrial systems where devices are responsible for human safety.

RS232 and RS485 to fibre optic converters are used in industrial automation systems where long-distance data transmission is required in harsh environments, and in monitoring and control systems such as SCADA systems where reliable communication is crucial. They are also used in critical infrastructures, such as power plants, waterworks or gas networks, where high reliability and fault tolerance are required, and in transport systems such as railways, airports or metros, where control and signalling equipment must be distributed over long distances.

Specification and features of converters

Depending on the interface, one device on the RS232 side and up to 16 devices on the RS485 side can be connected to the converter. The converters are equipped with classic communication ports: RS-232 on a DB9 connector and RS-485 on a screw connector. On the fibre-optic port side, the appropriate type of connector must be selected, such as SC/UPC, ST/UPC, LC, or choose a converter with an SFP port that allows the installation of any fibre-optic insert. The different versions of the converters support communication with multi-mode, single-mode or single-fibre (WDM) optical fibre.

Selected models of ADFweb converters additionally have a diagnostic function after Modbus, which allows, among other things, to read DIO states. among other things, to read DIO states, check the status of the device, the amount of transmitted data and many other service functions, as well as a built-in IO module, which allows the transmission of DI and DO (NO, NC) states over optical fibre. From a networking point of view, all fibre optic converters are transparent and do not interfere in any way with the frame transmitted over RS-232 and RS-485. Depending on the version, the converters can operate in point-to-point mode or in single and double loop mode, which allow converters with RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces to be connected via a single fibre optic cable.
