Switch EN50155 (railway) - what is it, where do we use it?
The railway switch is an EN50155-compliant Ethernet switch designed to operate in demanding transport environments. The automotive version of the Rail Switch can perfectly cope with the high vibrations, impacts, electromagnetic discharges or extreme high and low temperatures found in road and rail transport applications. The EN50155 switches available from us offer up to 5 years warranty and an MTBF (mean time without failure) of 20 years.
Railway switch - features, interfaces and extras
Railway switches come in managed and unmanaged (plug&play) versions and have from 5 to 16 Ethernet ports with M12 connectors (with different encodings: A, B, D, X, Y - to be selected at the production stage) and transmission speeds of 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps. The switch's Ethernet ports can be equipped with the Power over Ethernet function (POE standard 802.3af and 802.3at), so IP cameras and other PD devices can be powered without any problems. The housings of the best railway switches are made of metal and are IP67-rated (waterproof and dustproof).
Railway switches are often equipped with additional 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps fibre optic ports, which are already built in at the production stage. In order to properly select a switch for fibre optics, special attention should be paid to the type of fibre optic connector grinding and the type of fibre optic (single-mode or multimode).
The EN50155 switch will most often be equipped with a transportable, wide-range 12-48VDC or 230VAC power supply and a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 75°C. This allows EN50155 switches to be installed in very demanding conditions and vehicles exposed to freezing or very high temperatures. An additional advantage with power supply will be the redundant power supply, which guarantees greater system reliability. Some industrial switches are also equipped with a relay that alerts you to a device failure.
