The communication protocol NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 is used in industrial automation for creating or communicating networks of electronic devices, mainly marine navigational instruments, e.g. GPS receivers, chart plotters, echosounders , wind meters, radars, autopilots. The communication between the instruments allows, for example, the correction of the course by the autopilot on the basis of GPS indications.
