Industrial isolated RS-485 repeater, I-7510 by ICPDAS.

Repeaters for RS-485 buses such as the I-7510 are used to extend the network range and increase the number of nodes that can be connected to a single bus. With repeaters, the limitations of a standard RS-485 bus, such as maximum cable length and number of devices, can be overcome. Features of RS-485 repeaters:

  • Range extension: They amplify the data signal, allowing transmission over longer distances without loss of quality.
  • Increase the number of nodes: They allow more devices to be connected, exceeding standard limitations.
  • Signal isolation: Protect devices from surges and interference thanks to galvanic isolation.
  • Signal conversion: Enable integration of different types of devices by converting between RS-422 and RS-485.
  • Communication enhancement: Automatic RS-485 direction control ensures smooth data flow and minimises signal collisions.

I-7510 from ICPDAS provides a separator function and 3000VDC bidirectional optical isolation between one RS-485 bus and the other. The separator can also be used as a signal amplifier to extend the transmission of an existing network. In addition, the RS-485 system can be extended beyond the 256-node limitation imposed by the interface standard.

The I-7510 Repeater only allows for the connection of data+ and data- signals from the RS-485 interface. The I-7510A version additionally provides the ability to convert a 2-wire RS-485 into a 4-wire RS-422 signal. The I-7510AR has all the previously mentioned functions and differs in addition with three-way optical isolation. The I-7510 and I-7510A have two-way isolation, this means placing isolation only on the input RS-485 port, while the I-7510AR has three-way isolation, which means placing isolation on both the input and output RS-485 ports.

Maximum transmission distance on the RS-485 bus at 9.6kbs is 1,200m, and at 11,200kbs it is as short as 400m. The repeater is powered from 10-30VDC and has a power consumption of only 2.16W. The repeater's plastic housing is easily DIN-rail mounted and meets the UL-94-V0 standard for fire-resistant materials. The repeater is a plug and play device and requires no configuration.

The wide operating temperature range of -20°C to 75°C allows the repeater to be installed in outdoor boxes exposed to frost and industrial control cabinets that reach very high internal temperatures. In addition, the 3000VDC 2-way isolation protects the devices from electromagnetic surges, together providing a fully industrial product suitable for the most challenging applications.

Features of the I-7510 repeater:

  • Automatic baud rate switching, 300 ~ 115200bps
  • ESD protection for RS-485 data lines
  • 2-way isolation protection 3000 VDC
  • Transmission speed up to 115200 bps
  • Input voltage +10 ~ +30 VDC
  • Automatic RS-485 direction control
